Frequently Asked Questions

Curious About RDC’s OSL Ring Dosimeter?

Find answers to common questions about Ora, our OSL ring dosimeter badge.

How does a OSL ring dosimeter work?

Our OSL ring dosimeter measures radiation exposure using beryllium oxide to store energy when exposed to radiation. The material traps electrons in higher energy states, then a light source stimulates the electrons to release the energy during processing and emit light. We measure the intensity of this light, which is proportional to the radiation dose, to determine the amount of exposure. OSL rings can be re-read multiple times for verification and archival purposes.

We specifically engineered our OSL ring dosimeter for extremity monitoring due to its small, ergonomic form factor. You can comfortably wear the badge on your fingers or wrists, ensuring precise radiation dose measurements for these sensitive areas. The OSL ring is lightweight and unobtrusive, making it ideal for professionals who need to monitor radiation exposure without hindering their daily tasks. Wear your ring badge in addition to a whole body dosimeter for peace of mind and enhanced safety.

OSL ring dosimeters can measure photon energies ranging from 12 keV to 7 MeV and beta radiation above 226 keV Eavg to 2283 keV Emax. Our OSL ring is suitable for detecting X-ray and gamma radiation across a wide spectrum of energy levels.

We built the OSL ring dosimeter to withstand harsh conditions, making it highly durable and resistant to environmental factors such as heat and moisture. Its robust construction ensures that it continues to provide accurate and reliable dose measurements, even in the most demanding environments. This durability makes it a dependable choice for professionals who need consistent performance in their radiation monitoring equipment.

An OSL ring dosimeter is most effective in environments where precise extremity monitoring is necessary, such as medical facilities, nuclear power plants, and research laboratories. Our ring badge provides accurate dose measurements for hands, fingers, and wrists, making it invaluable for professionals in medical, nuclear, and research fields. Its ability to deliver reliable data in these settings helps enhance safety protocols and ensure regulatory compliance.

After you return your OSL ring dosimeters to RDC, we’ll process each badge using specialized readers to stimulate the dosimeter material with light, causing it to emit luminescence proportional to the radiation dose absorbed. We’ll measure the emitted light and convert the data into a dose reading, then compile detailed reports, which will be made available online in your MyRadCare account within 10 business days of receipt of the badges.
