All fetal monitoring options have a 1 mrem (0.01 mSv) lower limit of detection with a minimum reportable dose of 10 mrem (0.1 mSv) for OSL and TLD badges and 1 mrem (0.01 mSv) per month for NetDose™ digital dosimeter.
Choose from tried-and-true TLD and OSL fetal badges or upgrade to NetDose™ digital fetal monitoring with real-time data, granular hourly reporting, and on-demand visibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our fetal monitoring options.
Fetal radiation monitoring is the practice of using a dosimeter (badge) worn at the waist to measure and track radiation exposure to the unborn child during pregnancy. This ensures both the declared pregnant worker and the fetus remain within regulatory safety limits.
Radiation Detection Company offers three fetal monitoring solutions:
Declared pregnant employees who work around ionizing radiation, such as in radiology, nuclear medicine, fluoroscopy, or industrial imaging, should wear a fetal monitoring badge in addition to their standard whole body badge.
The fetal dosimeter should be worn at the waist in addition to a whole body dosimeter, which should be placed at the shoulder or collar. If wearing a lead apron, the fetal badge should be placed under the apron to accurately measure exposure levels to the fetus.
Unlike some whole body badges that may be exchanged quarterly or annually, fetal monitoring badges should be exchanged monthly, if not more frequently. This provides timely, detailed dose reporting to meet compliance requirements and provide peace of mind.
According to NRC regulations (10 CFR Part 20), the radiation dose to the embryo/fetus of a declared pregnant worker should not exceed 500 mrem (5 mSv) over the course of the pregnancy, with efforts made to keep the dose below 50 mrem (0.5 mSv) per month.
If dose limits are at risk of being exceeded, the RSO should work with the employee and employer to adjust work duties, ensure additional shielding, or reassign responsibilities to minimize exposure.
Employees should notify their Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or supervisor in writing of their pregnancy. The RSO can then assign a fetal badge through the MyRadCare™ platform for fast delivery, often within 2–10 business days.
