How does an OSL ring dosimeter work?

The ORA™ OSL ring dosimeter measures radiation exposure using beryllium oxide to store energy when exposed to radiation. The material traps electrons in higher energy states, then a light source stimulates the electrons to release the energy during processing and emit light. We measure the intensity of this light, which is proportional to the radiation dose, to determine the amount of exposure. OSL rings can be re-read multiple times for verification and archival purposes.

We continue to support TLD technology where it makes the most sense, including whole body monitoring. For extremity monitoring, however, we’ve chosen to standardize on ORA™ OSL ring dosimeters.

OSL technology offers advantages for extremity applications, such as strong performance at low dose levels, consistent measurements in high-use environments, and flexible reporting options. Standardizing on ORA™ OSL rings allows us to deliver reliable dose of record data while simplifying program management and maintaining compliance.

This approach ensures our customers receive the most appropriate technology for each monitoring application without compromising safety, accuracy, or regulatory confidence.

Our ring dosimeters are specifically engineered with a small, ergonomic form factor for extremity monitoring. The ORA™ OSL ring is designed for comfortable finger wear, ensuring precise radiation dose measurement in these sensitive areas. Lightweight and unobtrusive, it allows professionals to monitor extremity exposure without interfering with daily tasks. For comprehensive protection, the ring badge is worn in addition to a whole body dosimeter, providing added confidence and enhanced safety.

After you return your ring dosimeters to RDC, we’ll process each badge using specialized readers and convert the data into a dose reading. From there, we’ll compile detailed reports, which will be made available online in your MyRadCare account within 10 business days of receipt of the badges.
