Valley Presbyterian Hospital: California Community Hospital Streamlines Radiation Compliance
A Community Hospital Focused on Safety and Compliance
Valley Presbyterian Hospital is one of the largest full-service acute care facilities in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1958, the nonprofit hospital provides a wide range of healthcare services to a diverse community, including emergency medicine, surgery, maternity, pediatrics, imaging, and more.
Valley Presbyterian Hospital is deeply committed to upholding the highest standards of radiation safety and regulatory compliance. Led by experienced professionals like Bryan Henderson, PhD, MBA, BSRT (R), the hospital ensures rigorous oversight through routine monitoring, transparent reporting, and a culture centered on patient and staff safety.
The hospital continues its mission to deliver exceptional patient care, ensuring the safety of patients and staff remains a top priority – especially when it comes to managing occupational radiation exposure.
By partnering with RDC, Valley Presbyterian has further strengthened its ability to deliver safe, compliant care across all imaging services.

Problem
Outdated Vendor Practices and Growing Frustrations
For decades, Valley Presbyterian Hospital worked with another radiation monitoring provider. But over time, their provider became a liability.
“They really were not providing what I needed from them,” said Bryan Henderson, PhD, MBA, BSRT(R), Director of Imaging Services. “They weren’t giving me the reporting structure we needed in California … we needed more incremental readings, not just a dose overview.”
“In California, regulatory safety regulations and mandates are continuously being updated, and it’s our responsibility as leaders to ensure that we are aware of any upcoming changes with the law. It’s absolutely vital to stay on top of things and make sure radiation safety and compliance are our top priority.”
Beyond data limitations, the experience was increasingly frustrating.
“They were just nickel and diming me for any and all charges. When we called to get information, they would always bring up a past due balance. We couldn’t get reports to give our employees. It was very frustrating.”
For a nonprofit community hospital, inconsistent support and the inability to access real-time dose reports posed a serious compliance risk.
Solution
A Reliable, Transparent Partner With Industry Expertise
After learning about Radiation Detection Company (RDC) at a radiology conference a few years ago, Bryan was immediately drawn to the company’s American-based operations, transparent approach, and compliance-focused solutions.
“I talked to two of the RDC employees, and they said, ‘We’re located in Texas. We’re an American company.’ That really mattered to me. We’re a small independent facility, and they were more than willing to work with us and structure everything to meet our needs.”
Bryan wanted to ensure RDC could address the friction points that previously put Valley Presbyterian Hospital’s reporting compliance at risk.
“I also told them, ‘My previous company couldn’t change the way the radiation dose is reported. Can you guys do this?’ And they were able to move the decimal point two spaces to give us a more detailed report, which our inspectors really like. That to me was a big deal – the relationship between the company and me. I really enjoy that.”
RDC offered the robust reporting functionality, customer service, and transparency the hospital had been missing – all with a smooth transition process.
“They were very transparent with me,” Bryan said. “They helped make the transition somewhat smooth, and most everything was plug and play. I think we got the entire thing done in like one week. With my staff, I wanted to make it as seamless as possible, keeping the same routine every day so they don’t lose their good habits.”
And RDC maintained that same ease of use and exceptional customer service after the onboarding.
“Anytime I send an e-mail, I get a response quick. You also check in with me periodically. I get an e-mail every other month from somebody, usually Kerri or someone else on the team that just says, ‘Hey, how’s it going? Everything good? Anything I could do for you?’”
With RDC, customer relationships are a priority.
“The other company, I always had to call them. I honestly didn’t even know who my representative was. When I did get a business card, by the time I called them, it was already somebody else. So it’s nice to just have that connection where I feel like I can just reach out and get my questions answered.”

As the Director of Imaging Services at Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Bryan Henderson has a lot to be proud of.
“My facility has made amazing progress with patient safety and compliance. We have a dedicated team of patient focused leaders that have put together multidisciplinary committees such as our Radiation Safety Committee, our Quality Committee, and our Environment of Care Committee. These committees meet and discuss patient safety regularly and report all the information up to our Compliance Committee. It’s great to have so many committees working together to ensure that patient safety is a top priority.”
For Valley Presbyterian Hospital, switching to RDC wasn’t just about getting better reports – it was about restoring trust in the monitoring process and ensuring radiation safety for the entire organization.
With trusted dosimetry monitoring from RDC, Valley Presbyterian leadership can focus on what is most vital: protecting staff and patients while delivering outstanding care to the community.
